The Darkest Night

Sade and Johnson have been together for some time.  They got married at a very young age when some of their mates were yet to find their feet financially. Johnson owns an industry that supplies raw materials to production companies while Sade owns one of the biggest malls in Lagos. Their love story is one that anybody that loves good things would like to hear.

Sade came from a wealthy home hence her ability to achieve a lot within a short period of time. Johnson on the other hand came from an average home which appears not to be rich or poor. He strived so hard to make investments that will set him up for life and good fortune located him. At the age of 28 when his mates were still moving from a firm to another with their CVs, he already owns a big industry with over 100 employees.
His friendship with Sade started back in their primary school days. Many actually mistook them for twins because of their closeness. When they completed their primary education, Sade got admitted into Queens College, Lagos and Johnson was admitted at Federal government college Bida.

They couldn’t communicate with each other for the six years they spent in secondary school because they had no means of communication. On graduating from high school, Johnson tried all possible means to reconnect with his childhood friend but it was all to no avail.
After several months of trying, he gave up and decided to face his future squarely. He took the university matriculation examination the year he got out of secondary school but was denied the course he chose. He decided to re-write the following year instead of going into what he does not have passion for. Many advised him that he should accept the admission stating that he will get used to the course and he will develop a likeness for it as time goes on but his mind was already made up. Johnson is the type of person that is usually adamant somewhat stubborn when it comes to things that have to do with academics.
The following year, he took the examination again and got exactly what he expected. This time around he swore that even the witches in his village cannot stop him from entering the university that year because he scored higher than majority of those that applied for the course. When the admission list came out, his name was the 4th on the list of those admitted to study Business Administration.

He resumed school the following month and met all the required processes that new intakes are meant to go through. He resumed lectures and met new friends. Now, he has gone into the world and being the only son, he tried so hard not to let his family down.
One fateful morning as he was rushing to school to have his lectures for the day, the unbelievable happened. Someone shouted his name and quickly hugged him from behind. Turning towards the direction of the lady that hugged him, he couldn’t believe his eyes.  Sade! He exclaimed. “I have looked for you for ages. Where have you been? How is everything?” He asked in excitement.

“I have been good, dear. I have asked so many people for your address but nobody seems to know the person I’m talking about”.  She explained.
“Everything is now okay provided that you are now here with me” Johnson added.
They started discussing and he got to know that they are studying the same course though Sade is now a year ahead of him.
Sade gave him all her year one materials and they became best of friends once again.
Johnson helped her out in some of the assignments that involve calculation because she was not too good with calculations and Sade on the other hand, contributed her quota by supporting him all through their stay in school.

Unlike some “recharge card” girls that befriends some guys to gain certain favours, Sade was more focused on what the future holds for them and this made Johnson to confide in her.
Some years later, they graduated and left the university.
For Johnson, this is now time for full time business as some of his lectures and school activities were affecting his extracurricular activities. He has been a very good source of inspiration to Sade and this is the reason why they can never leave each other. Many envied their relationship but they didn’t care about that as they were much focused.
Some years later, Johnson took the bold step and proposed to her. She didn’t hesitate to declare in the affirmative because she has been waiting for that very moment.
They later bore kids and started their own home. Like every other parents that takes their wards to school and takes care of them, they joined the train and assumed the responsibility that comes with parenthood.

Their love for their kids and each other grew and they were living happily until one evening. Her husband returned from work and some minutes later, he got a call that his office has been ransacked. He hurried to the company and saw the company’s security men in the pool of their own blood. He became devastated and rushed into his car to leave the scene and inform security operatives. He was on the verge of entering his vehicle to reverse so he can leave the scene immediately and shots of bullets were fired. Johnson has been gunned down. The armed robbers rushed towards him and collected his car keys and his mobile phones. Three hours later, he was yet to return to the house and his wife became worried.

“My husband has never been outside beyond 10pm” she said with a voice that depicts worry.
She called his mobile phones but they have been switched off. She became restless. 11pm passed, but Johnson was not yet back. Now it has become obvious to her that something must have gone wrong. She called the cops and informed them of the situation and gave them the address of the company. When they got there, it was already 1am. They saw Johnson lying lifeless on the floor. They called his wife and gave her the situation report. Sade collapsed immediately. She knows what this news means to her and their kids. Their best friend has embarked on a journey of no return. That night marked the beginning of a terrible era in their lives.

WRECKED: Episode 3

WRECKED: Episode 3

As Obiageli got home, she took charge of her shop and thanked her neighbour.
Seven months later, as she was in the shop, she saw a job advert online and decided to apply.
Three weeks later, she was called for an interview. She performed excellently and was employed. She handed her shop over to her mum and started work.
In her office, she found favour in the eyes of their boss and her fellow workers. This made her more popular as she follows her boss to virtually all the external company meetings. Sometimes, she represents the company whenever the manager is not around.

Some years later, she was in a conference when a man walked up to her. He introduced himself to her as Briggs Maday. Briggs is the owner of one of the leading chocolate industries in the country.  Even though Obiageli doesn’t know him but she knows the name of his company because she used to sell his chocolates when she was managing a shop. They got talking, one thing led to another and they exchanged contacts. They became good friends and started seeing each other. During one of their dates, Briggs asked the “big question” and Obiageli said Yes.
He was very happy because it has not been easy with him. He lost his ex fiance to conflagration.
He informed Obiageli’s parents of his interest in their daughter and they gladly welcomed him.
Some months later, they got married and this set Obiageli’s village on fire. Emeka’s mother had gone to tell the villagers that Obiageli has bewitched a billionaire to come and marry her. This devastated Obiageli. She weeps every time she remembers this.

Eight months later, she came back home to see her parents and inform her of her intention to relocate them to the city where they stay hoping that this will reduce the gossips Emeka’s mother has been using her family to do.
Her parents accepted the idea even though her father hesitated because he knows nobody in the city. He thought of places he can be hanging out in the evening for fresh palm wine but then that was the only option. They relocated to the city and had peace of mind.

Some months later, Obiageli was delivered of a baby boy. There was jubilation all over the place. Briggs invited his employees to his house to come and have a good time and eat to their fill. Of course Emeka’s mother will not get to know of this anytime soon. She has become Obiageli’s worst nightmare. How a fellow woman will just naturally hate her is what she cannot decipher.
Her son grew bigger each passing day. When he became of age to go out, he was brought to the church and was given the name Sochima (Only God Knows).
Obiageli and her husband tried to have more babies but it wasn’t forthcoming, they decided to devote more time to loving Sochima.
Two years later, he was enrolled in a kindergarten to enable her parents be going about their daily responsibilities.

He later advanced to nursery one and the trend continued. During his stay in high school, he was the best science student and graduated with distinction. He was sent abroad by his parents to study medicine and surgery. Six years later, he graduated and started his internship. He completed his internship and became a registered medical doctor and a first class surgeon.
He worked under some senior colleagues for a while before making plans to establish a hospital of his own.
With the help of his dad, they built a big hospital for him and he hired some other medical workers; nurses, radiographers and clinic assistants.

In no distant time, his hospital got a national recognition because of the way they respond to so many emergency  calls. The clinic operates all day and all night as the doctors are usually on shift; Sochima will work in the day today, the following day it will be his turn to work at night.
One fateful day, he was in his office with his mother who came around to know how it’s going and a junior doctor knocked on the door. He came to inform him of a new emergency case and this case requires urgent attention. He instructed them to bring the patient inside the emergency unit. His mother stood up to leave so he can go and attend to his patient. As she was leaving, she saw the patient the junior doctor talked about. It was Emeka’s mother.
“Emeka?” she said  in surprise as she saw Emeka in the waiting room.

“Oby, it’s me. What are you doing here?”
“I came to see my son” she answered.
“Okay, sorry about that. Is he sick? Where is he?” He calmly asked.
“He’s not sick. He’s the chief medical doctor here. This is his clinic” She said as she walked back inside  to see Emeka’s mother. Sochima has already heard of how she tormented his mother and her family. He swore never to have anything to do with her.
Emeka could not believe what he just heard. They have been to the Federal hospital in the city, they tried their best before referring them to this private hospital.
As she got inside the emergency unit, her son has already seen the name in the hospital card and what his mother told him about this woman. He does not want to treat her because he swore to her mother that he will never have anything to do with the family.

Her mother pleaded and reminded him of their medical oath and ethics. He finally proceeded with the surgery. Due to the fact that he has already wasted so much time, he was not able to do certain things he should do and this made Emeka’s mother permanently incapacitated. Even though she recovered quickly but life was no longer fair to her as she wasn’t able to do certain things she used to do.
What goes around comes around.

I Lost Her

I Lost Her

Jennifer and I has been friends for more than a decade. We actually met at high school. She’s such a beauty; naturally endowed and has this burning passion for education.
When we were about graduating from college, I developed feelings for her. I didn’t tell her because I didn’t want to drag my friendship with her to the mud. Even though it may work out, but I was afraid of losing her so I kept my cool.

When we graduated, she was admitted to study medicine at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. I left for Imperial college of Engineering to obtain a degree in Mechanical engineering. Thoughts of her will always come to my mind each passing day. Even though we’re now in two different places but within me, we’re still together. I didn’t know if she felt same way for me; I didn’t find out.
Fast forward to 2006, she was rounding off her degree in Medicine. I have already graduated and I’m now on the verge of enrolling for a Postgraduate study in Marine Engineering.

When she called me that she’s almost through with the school of medicine, I was very happy and optimistic because I was making plans to settle with her.
I congratulated her and we felt very happy. It’s been tough all these years but we’ve been able to scale through.
She invited me to her induction but I was not able to make it to the induction because I had a seminar to present.  I later called her when I got home to know how it went. She was happy that I called and I congratulated her once again. We both happily went to bed.

The next day, I left for school because I was going to have a morning lecture scheduled to hold at 8am. When I got there, there was no sign of the lecturer and my colleagues weren’t there either. I made calls and they told me that It has been rescheduled. I actually got a message that morning but I forgot to open it. It was our communications representative that sent messages across to inform us of the new development. I felt bad because I didn’t just waste money, I wasted the time I should have used for something else. I waited behind so I can receive the lecture because there’s no point going back home and coming back to school again. The lecture ended and I compared my note with that of my colleagues and picked the points they have which I missed.

As I got home, I was about unlocking the door and my cell phone rang. It was Jennifer. She called to know how the day was. I was glad she called. I observed that recently, we now discuss more often but I didn’t know if it was a sign or not. I didn’t know if making my proposal is going to work; I was just afraid of what I cannot define.
Five months later, I rounded off my Master’s degree and Jennifer was hired as an Intern at John Hopkins School of Medicine because she performed very well in their final MBBS exam. She made a distinction.
I was happy for her. She hasn’t changed; that intelligence and smartness is still intact.
Some months later, I joined an engineering firm to practice for a while before looking for a higher firm.

Jennifer on the other hand has been promoted from an ordinary intern to a certified medical practitioner. She was given so many medical allowances.
Our friendship grew each passing day but I didn’t know how to make the move.
Three years later, I was now working in one of the leading car manufacturing industries and she’s also been promoted where she’s working.
One fateful morning, I was making plans to propose to her when I got a call. It was Jennifer. She called me and excitedly told me that she was getting married. Phew! I’ve been doomed.
The woman I love has been taken. It isn’t her fault. I decided not to make my intentions known to her until I’m ready. I’ve lost her. Life goes on.

The Path I Never Wished To Tread

Claudia got married to Nick at a very young age. They were blessed with three children. She’s the first child of her parents. She was given out in marriage so she can help in training her younger siblings.

Nick, a good man with a good heart. He is very generous and churchy but he’s got a fault. He beats his wife at every slightest provocation.
Growing up, Claudia wanted  a man that will love her unconditionally, a man that will treat her like an egg. During her days in high school, she usually tell people of how she’s going to be the best wife on earth to the man that will marry her.
Some years later, she got married. Things were moving normally until she gave birth to their first child and it turned out to be a girl. She gave birth to the second, It was the same result. The third issue was not different as it happened to be a girl also. Her husband got furious because so many questions started coming to his mind. “Who’s going to take care of my already acquired wealth? Who’s going to take over my establishments when I’m weak?”

These and so many other things occupied his mind. The first day he started dishonouring his wife was the day she was breastfeeding their daughter, Aura.
Aura has been crying and Claudia went inside to check what was wrong with her. As she got there, she observed that the baby is hungry. She felt the need to breastfeed her. This made her to forget that she was preparing lunch for her family. Unlike her husband who usually comes back at 5pm, he got back earlier that day. At first he thought that it was their neighbour’s food that was burning but then the smell was oozing from the kitchen into the sitting room of their duplex.
“Claudia!” He shouted.
“Are you not the one cooking this food that is burning?” He queried.
“Good evening, darling, welcome. I’m so sorry about that. I was breastfeeding the baby…”

Before she could finish talking, he has slapped her on both cheeks.
“So this is how you normally waste our food stuffs? Later you will write a list of items that will be enough to pay your bride price. Witch”. He said in fury.
Claudia could not help crying her eyes out. “Have I done something wrong by going to breastfeed our baby” She said as tears rolled down her cheeks.
“What mess have I put myself into? Nick has given up on me and I perfectly understand his reasons but he wouldn’t listen to me. How am I responsible for not giving him a male child? Is it not the seed he deposited inside me that I gave him back? God I take solace in you” She added, cleaning her eyes.
The next day, Nick was ready for work. He was about leaving and Claudia asked him to help her drop their kids in school since he’s moving towards that direction. She explained to him that she’s going to bathe their baby and feed her so she may not be able to do that.

He vehemently refused and walked out on her. She checked the time and it was already late. If she starts giving attention to the new baby first before going for school run, her children may miss the first class. She dressed up and brushed her teeth and took her children to school.
One blissful evening, She was in the room with her kids and her husband came in with a lady. He gave her the keys to one of the rooms in their duplex so she can be staying with them pending when she’ll secure a job.
This was unlike Nick who will always consult his wife before doing anything. When his wife approached him, he told her to get out of her presence, asking her if she contributed a penny to the construction of the house.
She felt bad. Tears rolled down her cheeks. Crying has become her groove. She cleaned her eyes and got back into the children’s room so that they will not perceive that their mother cried.

Amanda, the first daughter already knows that their parents have not been in good terms but cannot state the reason for that. She will always come to their mum and ask her if anything is wrong. Their mother, being a wise woman will always assure her that everything is fine because she wouldn’t want to involve them in what is going on in the family lately.
The last straw that broke the camel’s back was the day her husband was caught cheating with another woman. Claudia’s friend checked into a hotel to pass the night so she can be able to attend the pilgrims summit they were supposed to have in Lagos.
When she saw Claudia’s husband, she took pictures of him and the lady she was with and sent to her. Her heart has been shattered. She cried and waited for the heavens to open and the earth to open so she can jump in and forget her sorrows. None happened and she felt so bad.

The next day, she waited for her husband to return but he didn’t return. She packed her things and headed for her parent’s house.
On getting back home, her mother was the first to see her and dashed out to go and welcome her daughter. Behold, her daughter’s face looked gloomy. “What is wrong, child?” She asked.
“Mum, I’m done. It’s not just working. I never wanted to tread this path but you pushed me into it. I understand that it was because of my family’s financial status but I gave you reasons to allow me stay back and fend for my siblings and you pushed me into this”. Claudia lamented
Her mother looked at the daughter she gave a good moral upbringing and tears started flowing like a river.

“Claudia my child, your father and I wanted the best for you and your siblings. I am sorry if I pushed you into this. I never saw it coming. I’m truly sorry. Your husband is a good man but he only changed because you people have not been able to have a male child. We will devote our time to pray for him. There is nothing that God cannot do. Do you believe that he will change for good?” She asked her.
“Mum, I cannot answer that. I’ve lost hope. I’ve given up. Is God still alive?” She asked amidst tears.
“Why would you ask such a question? The heart of Kings are in the hands of the Lord. If he can change the hearts of so many kings, your case will not be different. I know that my redeemer liveth”. She concluded.
“Get your things let’s go inside. Your father is not yet back from work. Do not tell him anything when he comes back. You know how deadly he can be. He can go as far as giving your husband a permanent disability and choose to face a jail sentence” She pleaded with her.

“Okay, I will not” She promised.
Two days after Nick left, he came back to meet an empty home. “Where did this girl go?” He said as he thoroughly searched the house.
He searched the whole apartment but there was no sign of his wife or their children. She tried calling her on phone but her phone kept on rejecting his calls because she added his number to her phone’s blacklist.
She didn’t want to call her mother-in-law because he finds it difficult to call her since he started maltreating their daughter.
He decided to have a little rest before going through some papers that were submitted to him at the office.
As he lay down to rest, he touched a journal under their bed. This was the journal his wife has been reading to see how they can get off this condition. He realized that their inability to have a male child was not his wife’s fault. It was actually his fault. He wept bitterly for maltreating Claudia all these while.
Now, he’s back to his senses. Just like the prodigal son who realized his folly. He called his mother-in-law and asked for forgiveness. He reported to her that Claudia and the children are missing. She told him that they’re with her.

He asked to speak with her wife. Claudia answered him amidst tears. He asked her to forgive him that he has come to his senses.
She hesitated before accepting his apology.
The following day, he travelled to her wife’s place and brought his family back home. From that very moment, his love for her quadrupled.
Two years later, Claudia conceived and gave birth to a set of twins - all boys. They felt happy and had a get together. Their love life became the best that ever existed.

The Crush I Never Talked To

The crush I never talked to

Just like every other scholar, Eniola graduated from college Magna cum laude. She got so many job offers from so many private establishments that wanted her to work for them. Who doesn’t like a first class material?
Eniola, knowing the stuff she’s made of turned down all the job offers she got from the local firms and opted for for an international company that has its branch in her country.
On her first day at work, the group managing director gave her a special welcome treat by organizing a welcome party to say welcome to her so that other employees will get to know the genius that just joined the company.
Other workers in the firm she’s working are no different from her because most of them graduated with distinction as well.

When the event was over, she was given the keys to an apartment and an official car which she will use in running around.
She thanked the management and her fellow staff, promising them that her stay with them will be worthwhile.
The event ended with a closing remark from the company’s secretary.
One fateful day, Eniola’s mind flashed back and she reminded her undergraduate days. She remembered the hustles and bustles they passed through and how her hard work has been blessed by her creator.
During her undergraduate days, there was a boy she never talked to. She actually likes Ayo but she considered it absurd to make the first move.
In their penultimate year in college, Ayo got a fully funded scholarship to study in Germany.

He left for Germany, abandoning his college. Even though going to Germany will entail starting all over again but he decided to make that sacrifice because there are better job opportunities in Germany.
Three years later, Eniola is now a graduate and a working class lady. Ayo is now in his third year at the Imperial College of Engineering, Germany trying so hard to make the best out of his stay in the college.
A year later, he graduated with great distinction. The university’s management sought his approval to retain him as a lecturer but he turned it down because teaching has never been his strong suit.
Three months later at his convocation, when he was called upon to give vote of thanks as the best graduating student, so many Directors of companies were present but he was not aware of that.

When he finished giving the vote of thanks, he climbed down the podium to face tens of journalists that came to interview him.
In one of his statements, he stated that perseverance was the major drive that led to his breakthrough; telling them how he left his local college for Germany in third year. Everyone was amazed. He encouraged students in all academic fields to be persistent in their pursuit of education. He told them to choose education over schooling as there is a great difference between them. The interview ended and he got back home.
He’s now faced with “Now that school is over, what next?”
He was on the verge of going through an employment website when he got a call. It was the General Managing Director of a leading Car manufacturing company in Germany. He introduced himself to him and asked him if he’d like to work with them. Ayo whose joy knew no bounds quickly agreed and the Manager scheduled an appointment with him. The appointed date came, he was subjected to so many interviews and when it was over, he was asked to leave that the company will get back to him within a specified period of time.

Three days before the specified period, he was called to the company’s administrative base.
When he got there, he waited for a while because they were having a meeting in the conference hall.
When the meeting was over, the Manager presented him to the company and introduced him as the new branch managing director who will be in charge of their company’s branch in the United Kingdom. Ayo nearly fainted because he never expected it. He was dumbfounded. He opened his mouth several times to show appreciation but words weren’t coming out. All he could do was to shed tears of joy.
The meeting ended and the company made relocation plans for him to permanently move to the United Kingdom.
Few weeks later, he relocated to the UK and started working with them as the branch managing director.

Eniola, having worked for her company for three years felt the need to travel abroad and get her Master’s degree. She decided to go for Oxford University.
She told her boss of her intention to travel out of the country and get a post graduate degree. He was not too good with the idea of travelling out because he knows what the company has benefitted from her since she started working with them. He persuaded her to do it within the country so she can combine it with her job but her mind was already made up. He approved her request and told her that she can still come back and work for them when she’s done. She agreed and left.
Two months later, Eniola left for Diaspora. She started her Master’s degree in Oxford University, London.
On her first day as a postgraduate student, she remembered how the journey started some years back as an undergraduate. She smiled and said “Change is constant”.
Seven months after she started her Master’s degree in Business Management and Policy, she was required to prepare and submit her thesis to the supervisor assigned to her.

She thought of where to gather the required information needed to prepare a nice thesis but she couldn’t come up with any.
She called her friends to help her with ideas. They suggested so many companies to her but she decided to go for the last one she was given because she was assured that that is where she will get the information that has to do with everything she wants about her thesis.
The following day, she left for the company where she was directed to go.
On getting there, the secretary asked her to wait for a while that they’re having a brief meeting inside. She waited for some minutes so she can be able to see the Managing director of the company.
The door opened and Ayo came out, heading for his car. His driver has already cleaned it while they were inside the conference room. Eniola saw him and recognized him but couldn’t really say if he’s working there.
She went to the secretary to ask her if the meeting was over. The secretary was on a call so she had to wait.

As she dropped the call, Eniola asked her if they’re through with the meeting.
“Yes, they should be through with the meeting. It was the branch manager that just walked out” she said.
“Manager?” Eniola asked with surprise
“You mean the man that just walked out is the company’s manager?” she asked to be sure.
“Yes, madam, she’s the branch managing director” the secretary responded.
“But I’m here to see him” Eniola said
“He will soon be back, madam. He’s already late for the meeting they’re having with Federal Government’s Companies Regulatory Agency” she explained.
“Okay”  she responded.
Seconds ran into minutes and minutes ran into hours and Ayo has not returned. She was a bit tensed. So many questions started coming to her mind. “What if he’s not coming back today? What if my coming here turns out to be a futile journey?” she panicked.

Just then, the door opened and it was Ayo.
“Good afternoon sir” She greeted meekly, moving closer to him.
“Good afternoon, dear, how may I help you? Please direct her to my office” He instructed the secretary.
As he got to the office, Eniola was already waiting.
“I’m Eniola Olufemi Sir, a postgraduate student of Oxford University.
I’m running my Master’s degree in Business Management and Policy. I came to know more about how the labour market functions; the pros and cons of management” she explained.
Ayo fixed his gaze on her as she was talking. He knows the face but cannot recall where he saw the face.

“Okay, I will put you through, dear. Just give me few seconds.” He promised.
“Have we seen before? Your face looks familiar” Ayo asked.
“I’m definitely not going to miss this opportunity again! I missed it in my undergraduate days, It’s definitely not happening again” Eniola said to herself.
“Yes, I have seen your face too. I attended Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. I studied marketing. Actually, I used to see you in school then but we never talked till I graduated.” She narrated.
“You mean we attended the same school? How come we never talked?”
“Yes, we did but I was surprised to see you here. It is not just about seeing you but you’re now the managing director of a big company at a very young age within a short period of time. How did it happen” Eniola asked
“I actually left UNIZIK in our third year. I got a scholarship to study in Germany. When we graduated, I was the best graduating student and that was how I got this job. I was relocated from Germany to the United Kingdom as the branch managing director” Ayo explained.

“You’re indeed lucky” Eniola added.
“What about you? What have you been up to?” He asked.
“I took a leave where I was working to come and run a Master’s degree in the UK before going back. I also graduated with distinction.”
“That’s great!” Ayo added.
“I will prepare the information you need for your thesis and forward it to you tonight. Please write your details on this paper”. He promised, handing her a paper to write her details.
“How’s your family” He asked.
“They’re fine” Eniola answered.
“And him?” Ayo jokingly said, smiling.
“There’s no him” Eniola answered, returning the smile.
“I’m done. My phone number and my email address is there.” She said, giving him back the paper. Thanks so much” She said.
“You’re welcome” Ayo said, beaming with smiles.

“Do you mind if I call you later for lunch?” Ayo asked
“No, I don’t” She answered as she rose to leave. She thanked him once again and left.
Ayo spared some time and prepared the required information and sent it to her that night. She was very happy.
Five months later, she rounded off her program at Oxford University and was hired to work in Ayo’s Branch.
Her relationship with him grew and they made plans to come together as one. Two years later, they got married and lived happily.

WRECKED: Episode 2

Wrecked_Tales.com.ng

As Obiageli got up from the bed, she quickly headed for the bathroom to perform her morning rituals before going to her shop.
As she was taking her bath, she heard some strange voices downstairs. She looked through the window to see what was going on. It was Emeka, the first son of their neighbour. He  just returned from Diaspora with his family.
Emeka used to be Obiageli’s heartbeat until he left the country without informing Obiageli. Two years went by, Obiageli did not hear from Emeka. His mother was responsible for his action because she poisoned his mind by telling him that Obiageli’s parents are members of so many secret kingdoms, hence their inability to produce a male child, stating that they have used their male seeds for rituals. Emeka who was naïve as at the time he left the country believed her mother without asking questions.
Emeka’s mother used this to deceive him because he saw the level of love her son has for Obiageli and wouldn’t like her son to get married to him because she detests her. Obiageli did nothing wrong to her; she naturally hates her for who she is. Perhaps she’s jealous of her.    None of her daughters are as smart as Obiageli. Apart from the fact that Obiageli is Tall, fair complexioned and Intelligent, She’s also down to earth and this made her everybody’s sweetheart whereas her daughters are unserious set of ladies who went to the university but may not be able to say that this was what they studied in school. Just like every other campus girls, they misused their university days and had some misplaced priorities. They hardly attended lectures while in school but must be seen in every club where it is “Happening”.
Their unseriousness did not affect their grades because they used what they have to get the grades they wanted.
15 years after Emeka left the country in his bid for greener pastures, he’s now back to his town with his family. He came back to spend some time with them before going back to where he resides.
When he was in Diaspora, thoughts of Obiageli usually come to his mind but his mother’s statement shoves it away whenever it comes.
As Obiageli fixed her gaze on him through the window, thoughts of their childhood friendship took over her. She took solace in the adage that says “If you love something, let it go. If it comes back, it is yours. If it does not, it was never yours”.
“He wasn’t mine after all” She muttered.
She cleaned her body with her towel and dressed up so she can open the shop before her customers starts trooping in.
When she was done, she locked her house and left for the shop. On getting to the shop, she remembered that she drafted a list of the provisions that have already gone down and she has to go to the market to purchase them. She opened the shop and asked her neighbour to help her attend to customers that she will be back soon.
She boarded a bus and left for Market. As she got to the market junction, she alighted and went straight to get the things she wants to buy before rushing back home.

It was a blissful and promising morning in Obiageli’s apartment. Her cell phone rang and she picked up her phone to answer the caller.
“Hello, good morning” Obiageli uttered with a shallow voice which depicts that she just woke up from sleep.
“Good morning sweetheart” The caller responded.
“Who are you, please?” Obiageli asked.
Behold, it was Tunde, her course mate whom she lost contact with after graduating from college.
“Tunde, where have you been all these while? It has been ages! Have you secured a job? How is everything going?” Obiageli queried with all seriousness.
“I’ve been good, dear. Everything is fine and yes, I have secured a job. I was one of those that Federal government hired some months back” Tunde answered.
“Wow, you’re very lucky” She added.
“What about you?” Tunde asked.
“Well, I’m yet to secure a job for myself though I’m running a provision store as a part time business pending when I’ll get a good job” She answered.
“Okay dear” He added.
“How has it been going? I mean the business” He asked.
“Well, God is good; at least I’ve not been starving” She responded.
“Wow! Oby Oby, the most beautiful lady in our department in those days. I hope you’re still as beautiful as you were in those days?” He jokingly asked.
“What of OJ, Cynthia, Myke and others? Have you been hearing from them?” Tunde inquired
“It’s been long I heard from Myke but OJ now resides in the United states with his parents and siblings. I heard he got a job there too.  Cynthia is happily married with two kids - a boy and a girl” She answered.
“Oh really? OJ my nigga! Please send his digits to me later” He responded.
“Alright, I’ll do that as soon as we get off the phone” She promised.
“Ngwanu nne m, I just got your number from Muna, we’ll talk much later”
“Okay dear, it feels nice to reconnect with and old friend. Ka odi” Oby added as she terminates the call.
